Niwaki Ltd. grew from founder Jake Hobson’s deep appreciation for Japanese gardening, first inspired by the cherry blossom season during a trip to Japan in 1996. Drawn to the artistry of Japanese gardens, Hobson immersed himself in the country’s horticultural traditions. After teaching English in Osaka, he spent a transformative year at a traditional nursery, learning techniques like tree training, pruning, and rootballing. These experiences shaped his vision of gardening as both an art and a practice deeply rooted in craftsmanship.
Back in England, Hobson noticed the limits of conventional tools while working at Architectural Plants in Sussex. His brother-in-law Haruyasu shipped over Japan’s robust tripod ladders and precision tools like secateurs and shears, which quickly impressed English gardeners. Originally crafted for pine pruning and bonsai, these tools proved just as effective for tasks like hedge trimming and topiary.
The brand’s name, Niwaki – meaning ‘garden tree’ – reflects the harmony and artistry of Japanese gardening. Niwaki tools embody this philosophy, blending function with tradition to elevate everyday gardening experiences.
Niwaki celebrates tools designed to last. Each piece, built with meticulous craftsmanship, brings the efficiency and elegance of Japanese gardening into your hands.
