Cambium Lost Arts is a creative endeavor dedicated to reviving and exploring lost or dwindling crafts. Rooted in the belief that discarded traditions can find renewed purpose, the project celebrates human ingenuity and the timeless beauty of handmade art. At the heart of Cambium Lost Arts is a commitment to demonstrating that these forgotten crafts remain relevant, progressive and joyful in today’s world.
Currently, Cambium Lost Arts focuses on hand-split white oak basketry in the Appalachian style, an intricate craft that originated from Cumbrian spelk basketry brought to America by English settlers. This tradition flourished in Appalachia until the early 20th century, when machine-made baskets replaced the labor-intensive, durable, and visually striking handmade versions.
Each basket begins with a sustainably harvested white oak tree from the Catskill Mountains. Using only an axe and knife, the wood is split into pliable strips, which form the foundation for one-of-a-kind creations. With approximately 28 hours of careful, traditional craftsmanship, each basket is a testament to the power of preservation and the beauty of handcrafted traditions.
